I am traveling on my own again today. After many weeks of travel with different branches of family in the United States and then Spain, I am thrilled to be home again.
And, I have a Swiss travel pass that will soon expire so am doing my best to use it. Thus am “on the road” or more specifically, on the train again. The funny thing is that even though I am traveling today, I feel like I am home. After much wonderful time with family, I am happy for some time with myself. Or at least that’s what I thought I wanted. シ
I was looking forward to coffee on the train this morning, but my first train had no restaurant. Second one did, but it was full when I got there. I saw a gentleman working at a large table, and considered asking him if I could join him. Right at that moment he looked up and gestured that I was welcome to sit. Which I did, and ordered my coffee.
Several minutes later he asked me in English if I could watch his stuff while he went to the toilet. I answered that I’d be happy to. Next he asked if he detected American English. I said yes, and the conversation flowed from there to Geneva. The result was magical. We connected instantly, engaged in deep conversation, discovered possible work writing together, and planned for dinner with our partners. But the best part? I know we both went away feeling inspired and energized.
This dear friends, is why to travel on your own. Somehow, we are more open, more approachable, and opportunities arise that never would, if not for being alone. This is one way that solo travel becomes solo-soul-travel.
So get out there already!
